Canossa House of Spirituality in Tagaytay

It was 15 years ago when I first set foot into this place. It was our 3 days, 2 nights retreat for Senior High.  Before, we felt that it's freedom given to us (since we will have away time from home) but our school has a different intent!

Well in all essense, the Christian retreat can be defined in the most simplest of terms as a definite time (from a few hours in length to a month) spent away from one's normal life for the purpose of reconnecting, usually in prayer, with God.  (Wikipedia).

Being a catholic school, ofcourse, our Alma Mater wants us to experience how to reflect and recollect with God.  May it be in silence or in prayer.  I cannot say that I am a true blue Catholic but I am pretty sure that I was able to learn the basics of prayers, giving praise and thanks.

Since all of us (me, GBoy, Mika and Louise) went to Canossa -- we all experienced the retreat.   Mama as part of the faculty, also experienced a lot of retreats! :D

It was at Tagaytay, where the retreat house is overlooking Taal Volcano.  The feel was very serene and one cannot help but meditate, reflect and think back on how one's life was spent.  How we want to spend our lives moving forward!

It's true that we all need a time away from the busy city and technology so that we can connect to this one person who does not need a strong internet connection nor signal, we need to connect with God!   It is through silence that we can talk to Him and I hope that I was able to that before.

My goal: to be able to reflect and think back on the things that I should be thankful for and for the things that I want to achieve!

All is possible if we just let HIM into our lives! ^_^

Five People you meet in Heaven

This is my fourth book and I am happy to read another Mitch Albom inspiration.  This is all about life and how things happen for a reason.

Many of us look at our lives as a journey.  We always look forward and we always learn from the past but this book tells me that life is not just me moving forward or learning from the past -- it's more of understanding what we didn't know in the first place.

There were five people whom Eddie met in Heaven and from those five, I have gathered my own inspiration that I would like to share with all of you.

I. Life is a coin; there can only be one head  - in our daily grind we will encounter a lot of people.  People who has their own business in life and might have their own struggles.  If we come across difficult people, sometimes it pays to be quiet for 5 seconds and think if it will be worth it to be angry to them.  We don't know what they went through or have been going through and so being quite sometimes gives them a favor or the other way around.

II. Sacrifice - we often hear this word when somebody died.  In sacrificing it does not always mean that someone has to die -- not all the time.  For me it's simple; I can relate it to decision making.  Decisions, decisions, decisons -- they are an integral part of our daily lives, whether or not it's a huge decision or not, still we need to choose.  Most of the time we want everything in our favor but that's not how the world works, there will always be trade offs and that is when we sacrifice.

When Sweets left for Malaysia to work, I had to make a decision on whether or not to follow him there.  I was having a blast with my career and yet I felt that I will be incomplete if Sweets is not with me.  I had to make a tough decision; it seemed no brainer but I had to think thoroughly, I had to consult a lot of people then finally came with the decision to go to Malaysia.

That for me was sacrifice worth doing!

III. We are all connected with Love - scientifically speaking, we were all made out of love and that's why love is so special.  It made us all connected.  Therefore, it's important that we value where we came from, our parents.  When I was younger, I tend to look at them as the villain who wants to chain me up -- i didn't understand it.  Now, it's a whole lot different story.  My parents and my parents in law are one of the ultimate individuals in my life and I will be forever thankful to them!

IV. For the bitter and the sweet - how I loved this line!  It was mentioned by the one and only love of Eddie, Marguerite.  Her heaven was weddings in different countries and for me, my wedding was one of the best moments in my Life and it felt like Heaven.   It was, when all I can think of was spending my entire life with Sweets and spending it with him "for the bitter and the sweet".

V. Peace of mind - this is the ultimate heaven.  Having to think about nothing and just be carefree is a special gift that we can give to ourselves.  Therefore, if something is bothering us then we need to speak up.   Most of the time, we just need to ask to get the answers that we need!

Lastly, Heaven for me is everything!  It's the way we percieve things.  If we look at things on a positive note then anywhere we go, anyone we meet will be a piece of heaven here on earth!

My 5 seconds of Heaven Everyday!

One morning, my Mama Lena had a sip of coffee from her friend.  She said "Sarap ng kape mo ah" then the friend said "Nescafe 3 in 1 yan".

Then I said "yan ang kape ko araw araw, sila Mama kase literal na kape, creamer at sugar pinagsasama sama".

When I was in Malaysia, Sweets is my coffee maker because he does that well. He does good coffee from scratch (coffee, sugar and creamer).    If I'm tasked to make a coffee, 3in1 is my first and best option.

In my everyday life, i'd rather choose the easy things.  Those are my 5 seconder heavens and I believe that I owe that to myself!

How about you?

Happy Friday: We love to Fly!

Literally speaking, we (me, Sweets and my family) loves to fly and would like to fly only if we have the chance!

Since we don't have wings nor anti gravity powers, we just can't.  Being the creative human beings that we are (and all other people for that matter) the jump shot was introduced!

These shots were in Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines respectively!

Palawan and Thailand.

Malaysia (Langkawi)

These photos proves that we really love jump shots (there's more but I don't wanna flood this post).  We all wanted to capture ourselves flying in the air even if we only did fly for 1 second.

My point: Whatever it is that we dream about, we aspire -- all of them are possible because we know we can!!

If we say something that we can or cannot do, it's always right! So we better make the right choices in Life!

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch

When I told my manager, Ms My, that I was doing some reading, she lend me her book.
It was "The Last Lecture" written by Randy Pausch.

The book was really about his life and was very inspiring.
He had pancreatic cancer and had just months to live.  One of the things that he decided to do while he was still physically fit was to give his last lecture.  He was a professor, a scienist!

I want to share again the items that struck me the most.  The things that I want to relate in my life and to share to people who are important to me.

Time is Precious - especially when you are trying to win a battle over a terminal illness.

When I look at my life, I am more inclined to spend my time with my family and friends rather than watch a movie or browse the internet.  One item that was mentioned in the book was "Emotional Insurance" -- aside from investing all our money for life insurance, we should invest our time for Emotional Insurance.  We will never realize it but the premiums for an Emotional Insurance is worth every memory that we can build with our family.  Thus, now that we have all the time in the world, let's make sure that we are investing them the right way.  Seing travel escapades, happy lunches and get together photos are more exciting and memorable than a branded bag (This is just me investing memories that can last a lifetime!).

Gratitude - Randy was very specific when he mentioned the people who have helped him along the way.  His parents, his wife and children, his colleagues, mentors and football coach.  He was very pleased and thankful for all the opportunites that were given to him.

In our journey in this wonderful life, we will come across people whom will become instrumental for our success.  We need to recognize them as a special part of our lives and give back what we have achieved by thanking them. Personally, I am a recipient of good leadership, and I always make sure that I pay it forward.  We are sharing the wisdom so that future generations will realize the importance of gratitude.

Brick Wall - according to Randy, "Brick Walls are there so that we can assess how badly we want something".

In all reality this is very true.  The things that we badly want are not easy to get, most of the time we need to fight for it.  I think what's important is for us to identify which of the Brick Walls in our lives are worth fighting for and which are just hallow brick walls.

Ask - many times in Randy's life and career all he had to do was to ask and most of the time he gets what he wants.

In our daily grind, whether at work or at home, it always pays to ask.  Most of the time it helps fasten processes or tasks, sometimes it even helps build long term relationship or even success in career.

Coach Graham - Coach Graham taught him the fundamentals.

On their first football practice, coach didn't bring any football.  He said that there are 22 football players in the field and only one is holding the ball.  He wanted to teach them what the other 21 people should be doing.

Sometimes we are more focused in shooting the ball, we forget how the game is played.

Like in our lives -- we are busy achieving our goals and we forget about the little things that should matter to us, the fundamentals on why we are alive.  I am not discounting the fact that dreaming big is essential but we need to be always grounded and reminded on where our motivations and drive to succeed are coming from in the first place. :D

This book is just magical! If I will write my book maybe it will look like this and if I can share more information about this book, I could go on and on and I won't have space to write on!  This book is mostly shared in the corporate world and I hope you will also have the chance to read it!

Again, let's nurture our lives! We can never tell when our time is up!

A fulfilling Day!

Accenture is very active when it comes to Corporate Citizenship and one of the goals that I had for this year was to be able to volunteer in any of their initiaitives.  Some one month ago a mailer was released and it showed the list of programs that we can volunteer to.

The first volunteer activity that I got involved with was to interview an out of school youth and see if he can qualify to a technical or vocational training for his future jobs.  The volunteer work was a bit similar to what I was doing in Recruitment and thus I was comfortable doing it.

My second volunteer stint was still within my comfort zone but a bit different.

I discussed my interest to volunteer with my manager and the day before I volunteer -- her words were "Good Luck tomorrow".  She even taught me how to say "Good Morning".  It was very helpful!

Saturday morning, I was browsing through my presentation, reviewing some examples with Mama Inday and even asked her to give some examples... as if I was talking to my student.. then before I left home --
her words were "Good Luck!".

My volunteer activity was to teach one of four modules of "English for Success".  Yes, I will teach English and I was specifically assigned to discuss the following:

1. Conjugation
2. Tenses
3. Subject Verb Agreement

Sounds fun! Im not a fan of the English subject (not like Sweets) but I'm pretty sure I can handle it!

Now why was I excited? Here are my students:

Four talented and driven people who were very eager to learn the basics of English.  They have a big dream, they want to prove the world that they can do something that some people (sometimes) take for granted.  They want to work!

At first site, they seemed like your ordinary students.  However, the only way we can converse was through English Sign Language.

Now that's something I am not equipped but luckily we had someone who helped me interpret what I was trying to teach and it all went smoothly.

My goal was to teach some basics of English but the outcome was different.  I learned a lot more than what I expected -- How to relate with them, to realize their goals in life and to help them (even a little bit) in achieving those goals.

I cannot give them the work that they need but I hope I was able to relay some tips on how they can confidently carry themselves through an interview.  Two of them completed a Bachelor's Degree, one was undergraduate of Education and the last was a HS graduate.  I saw a lot of potential, only if they will be given a chance!

This is me together with my students, our interpreter, our representative from DSWD and from our partner from Leonard Chesire Disability Foundation.  They were all helpful and accommodating!

I wish to do more of these activities -- not only to help relay knowledge to people but to have a deeper understanding about Life!  About how we (abled people) take for granted the things that are sometimes precious for others!

Flappy Bird

I was in denial that I do not want that app installed in my phone.

Some days ago, I happily installed that app because Sweets was playing it.. But my highest at that time was only "3" points and I can't help but to be irritated!  Just "3" points for how many attempts??? This can't be right! Without thinking twice, I removed the app from my phone (yes the only app that was installed in my phone for only 10 mins).

Several days passed, I saw a lot of postings about Flappy Bird and just ignored it -- Thinking "I don't wanna be consumed by it".

Yesterday, news came out and this game will be removed from the App Store!  I was like "okie", then Sweets mentioned "Go ahead and install it, just don't play it".  "I think it should work" -- I said to myself!

After installing (again), of course I cannot help but to play it (again)!

My score was a staggering "4".  Wow! I improved from my last attempt!   This was after I had more than 10 Flapping tries!  Not bad! ^_^

Then Louise asked that she wants to try.

Louise: Palaro isa lang!
KL: Okie, isa lang matutulog na ako

Nag set up lang ako ng higaan nang biglang --

Louise: Ate eto na..
KL: Huwat!!!! Lintek!

First attemp was "18" and I thought my 4" points was already staggering!

Then the lesson that I learned.

KL: Pano mo natutunan un?
Louise: Ate, wag ka lang kabahan! Sa pag tap mo kinakabahan ka eh kaya hindi ka makalampas.

Wow! It answered all my questions and speculations!! Thanks Louise - now I know!!

58th Foundation Day of Canossa College

Everyone knows that we (me, Gboy, Mika & Louise) all studied at Canossa College. Every year we actively participated in our Foundation day -- field demos, plays, booths -- name it, you'll find us there!  After several years of working, I came as an alumni, an expecator.

Time flies so fast (as in really fast), 26 years ago, I was dancing in the field with the song "Labamba".

The field was all grass and there were white lines with cross as our markers. I was happily playing the tambourine and dancing my heart out!  I loved field demostrations!!

The field looked so big at that time, I felt restless just to walk from the Basketball Court up to the Gymnasium.  I needed to walk along side the field so that the scorching heat will not kill me.  If it's too hot, It's like sand storm when the wind blew.  Like pepper toppings on your ice cream! Eerrr!!

Today, as I walked to visit my alma matter, the grass field was no longer there.  It's now a covered court!  The distance between the (old) Basketball court area up to the Gymnasium is just so near! It's like, the ones I felt so big is so small now.  The years changed my perspective!

This year is Louise' last year to perform in the field demonstration, I went to see her dance and feel the Foundation Day air for the last time (hopefully not).

It's weird! When Louise was dancing, i felt like crying. The same feeling when Louise graduated pre-school from Zamora Learning Center!  I was a proud sister (totoo!).  The song they danced was beautiful, it added to my emotional jitters -- "Let Jesus be known, so that He may be Loved!"

After the dance, we had lunch! (Separate blog coming up).

We came back to watch the acrobatics.  At first, I thought that they will just do tumblings and jumping - I was wrong and (yes, old as I am) they blew me away with their talents!

The Balancing Act:
My side joke
(magbabatuhan lang pala kayo ng blocks, ano naman at napag tripan nyo na sa ere pa magbatuhan)

The Chair Act:
My side joke
(Sa amin, inuupuan ang mga silya, sila mukhang na bore sa pag upo lang sa mga silya)

The Wire Act:
My side joke
(Maghuhubad at magsusuot ka lang ng damit, pinili mo pang mahirapan)

The last act was a Basketball Tourny -- while driving a unicycle.  It was a lot of fun -- boo me I was not able to capture it (because of my limited phone memory).  Nevertheless, it will always stay in my mind and I will always smile!

After the awesome acrobatics presentation, Louise asked for us to ride the caterpillar.

Then after that heart pumping ride (for me) -- we went to take a photo from one of the booths there!

We were Koreanas for 5 minutes!

Overall, it was a fun day but I felt that the College Days that I experienced was a lot more fun.  Well it's just me. Maybe the generation now is different! Yikes im too old! ^_^

Kc's Baby Shower

Not like any other Baby Showers, this one is intimate! It's just the 6 of us!! ^_^

No, no, we are not selfish! Not because we want to have the Baby Shower on our own, we just wanted to spend this hour solely for our long overdue catch up and adding the baby shower for fun and memory!

It was three weeks ago when we planned for the date.  Thanks to Ochen for helping me out with this plan and it all worked so well even with our busy schedules and last minute confirmation.

I got this idea of course from Pinterest and I just can't wait to use it for my best friend!  The theme is pink because KC will be having Mulan Nicolai in just a few weeks!

We had a simple get together, pasta being our main dish and all the rest were pika-pika!

We had the following:
- strawberry stick-O
- strawberry pretzels
- strawberry Jelly Ace
- strawberry lollipops
- strawberry mallows
- Krispy Kreme

We all ended the night being full with food and laughter!! Such joy to see our best friend excited to have her baby!!

Cheers to Mulan!!

Special thanks to Mika who helped us prepare!!
